Vocalogy is the private studio of Grace Ng Ee Wern.

We are based in Singapore. We teach singing technique and consult on coaching song performance for an authentic, natural and effortless performance. Our singing technique fuses Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy ™ energy healing with Somatic Voicework ™ singing technique.

We advocate and maintain a whole-body approach to singing and sound making. Singing is not just teaching and understanding the tiny muscles of respiration, phonation and articulation. Functional singing is a product of a functional way of life.

We seek not so much to develop great performers per se but to develop performers who are self-assured in their creative expression and well-adjusted to take on life’s challenges, who become great performers in the process.

Towards a whole-body pedagogy

‘To dance, put your hand on your heart and listen to the sound of your soul.’– Eugene Luigi Faccuito

Movement is our primary teaching tool. Movement may be small and internal or it may come in the form of big, external gestures.

A body that moves is a body that is alive. A body that is alive expresses wellbeing mentally, emotionally and physically.

As we utilize Somatic Voicework ™ & Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy ™ in our teaching, we also include ideas and concepts taken from Laban Movement, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Taichi, Bellydance, and functional fitness training.

Singing and Speech

Communication is the basis of all sound making. Subconscious resistance to communication shows up as physical resistance to sound making. Physical resistance to sound making hampers the production of functional sound.

Many emotional, mental and physical resistances stem from speech. What have we been told about our vocal expression that makes us swallow what we have to say? What have we been told about raising our voices in public that makes our body subconsciously suppress sound making?

We believe these body-mind resistances are activated by any similar expression- be they singing or speech.

Singing and Well-being

Singing and Well-being are connected by Breath. Deep breath is pivotal to both Singing and good health. We believe that awareness & harmonization of mental, emotional and physical states that hamper deep breathing may result in a continuous state of well-ness and alive-ness for authentic expression.

Towards a musical way of living

‘Every physical body is fashioned according to a celestial harmony. Disease is a musical disharmony. No matter how out of harmony one is, there is always a core tone and rhythm of universal harmony underneath.’- Philomena Dooley, Jin Shin Jyutsu Text 1 page 38 (‘Harmonizing Vertebrae for Organs’)

Life is music. Human beings, as a part of life are therefore also inherently musical. Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy ™ goes so far to suggest that a person’s emotional life is related to his/her Harmony. A person’s Mind is related to Melody. A person’s physical state affects his/her Rhythm.

The human body is the source of all artistic expression. Art is an externalisation of internal rhythm, melody and harmony.  The human body in weight, space and time create and unite all forms of Art.

We thus do not believe in musical ‘talent’. We believe in creating safe, physical, emotional and psychological spaces for personal expression to grow and develop at its own time and pace.

What people say about us

I have attended 2 of Grace’s vocal sessions. It’s amazing how she puts Jin Shin Jyutsu into application in vocal work. In a 30minute class, I achieved what I could not have in probably even 8 sessions in other vocal lessons.

My daughter, Gaby, has been taking lessons with Grace for about a year now. Over this period, she has picked up many different techniques and her interest in singing songs of different genres has really grown. Through Grace’s guidance, Gaby recently took her Grade 1 classical vocal exams and scored a distinction. Grace’s lessons have gone beyond the typical singing classes to cover speech and expression, and techniques to deal with stress or stiffness in the body, which have been very useful I feel. Gaby is enjoying this integrated style of learning very much.

Liyen Ngmum of Gabrielle Lim

Grace is an gifted teacher who takes a multidisciplinary approach in working the voice and the body to release sound. As a long time triathlete, I’ve had trouble with my airflow due to chronic muscle contraction along my neck and diaphragm, resulting in a misaligned neck-chest-diaphragm-hip. She learned and applied Jin Shin Jyutsu techniques to help release the air, and help me belt at higher registers. It seems hard to believe at first, but then the results speak for themselves.

Grace is very knowledgeable about functional training, and she combines her theoretical and practical knowledge to help her students improve and strengthen their voices very rapidly. She also organizes various performance opportunities which are invaluable in helping her students to develop their confidence and public performance technique. She constantly challenges her students to do better and to meet their aspirations, through a combination of classes and performances and by encouraging them to take part in national and international competitions. Grace is an inspiring teacher to my daughter.

Carolyn Annparent of Cerys Sienna
Cerys Sienna is a two-time semi-finalist in the Musical Theatre category at the Llangollen Eistedfodd International Music Festival.
Grace is an amazing teacher which made vocal lessons even more worthwhile by incorporating Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy (R)! Besides vocal training, Grace has been guiding my daughter, Valerie, by using Jin Shin Jyutsu techniques to help heal herself and to help reduce stress. Valerie is now a much happier and positive girl. She looks forward to every vocal lesson after a long day from school. I am very grateful to Grace for integrating Jin Shin Jyutsu with vocal training.
Betty Lohmother of Valerie Lee

I’ve been with Grace for the last 1 1/2 years. She is an amazing person and a patient and caring teacher. Her lessons are not just voice training but a complete body and breath experience using the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu.  In the time I’ve spent with her not only has my voice improved but she had also been able to help me with my sciatica. In class she also teaches me self-help techniques to help my sciatic pain and improve my breathing that helps me sing better. It is indeed a holistic and beautiful experience.

Sanika’s passion is singing pop music. She enjoys every single session with Grace and always looks forward to class.  She feels that the more you know the more there is to enjoy about music. With that in mind, Grace aims to make each class informative, interactive and entertaining, offering her insights complemented with live performance practices. These lessons are helping Sanika towards her goal of performing pop music well.

Vrishali Vekhandemum of Sanika Vekhande

I used to have abdominal spasms which would act up inexplicably. Besides affecting my health, they also affected my singing, for example when I had to sing high notes. Working with Jin Shin Jyutsu improved both my health and singing as I can now breathe deeply and freely.
